Southern Folklore and Culture
Faculty: Dr. Alan Brown
Focuses on the folk traditions of the American Southeast. Students will be exposed to representative samples of Southern folk narratives (e.g., WPA Life Histories and Ex-slave Narratives, ghost stories, animal tales, jokes, etc.), folk crafts (e.g., pottery, quilting, twining, white oak basket making, soap and candle making, etc.), folk music (e.g., the blues, spirituals, fiddle playing, etc.), food festivals, gumbo, crawfish, catfish farms etc. A major part of the course is the combined influence of geography and a variety of ethnic groups to produce a culture blending that can be found nowhere else in the United States. The course will culminate in a field trip to New Orleans.
War and Warfare: An American Perspective
Faculty: Dr. Jeff Gentsch
From its inception, the United States has run the gamut of attitudes concerning diplomatic and military postures ranging from non-interventionist isolation to colonial and global hegemon. This course will frankly discuss the nature of U.S. diplomatic and military concerns and how they were dealt with by the powerful constitutional republic.

Dr. Alan Brown
Faculty
After receiving his B.A. in English from Millikin University in 1972 and his M.A. in American Literature from Southern Illinois University in 1974, he taught English and German at Flora High School in Flora, Illinois, from 1974 to 1976. Between 1976 and 1986, he taught English at Griffin High School in Springfield, Illinois. He has been teaching English at the University of West Alabama since 1986. Since 1990, he has also been a member of the Alabama Humanities Foundation’s Speakers Bureau.
Dr. Jeff Gentsch
Faculty
Dr. Jeff Gentsch, a Professor of Military History at the University of West Alabama, earned his doctorate from the Department of War Studies, King’s College London, and has presented papers at the Institute of Historical Research, London, and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. Since 1994, he has been an interpretative historian for Shiloh National Military Park, where he has conducted staff rides for the U.S. military and led hikes to commemorate the anniversary of the battle. Specializing in modern military history between 1859 and 1975, Gentsch holds a degree in geography which he integrates into his course methodology of political, economic, strategic, operational, and tactical analysis.
